Adaptation and diversity
Over the past 16 weeks, we’ve looked at some of the astonishing diversity of fishes that allow them to survive the challenges of life in their watery environment. From the ability to blend into one’s background to avoid predation, whilst developing unique adaptions to become efficient at exploiting seldom-utilised food resources, the challenges of being the prey or the predator are met. The diversity of methods employed to ensure the survival of their offspring is extraordinary, from producing thousands of eggs, to fiercely protecting and provisioning for just a few. Our favourite group of animals are simply amazingly diverse, and for me, it is probably this that makes keeping fish a thoroughly engaging and satisfying hobby. So, next time you look at your aquarium, see if you can spot the features that make your fish adapted to their environment.
