Archerfish

While typically a disgusting habit, these fish spit to survive. We are, of course, talking about archerfish (Toxotes jaculatrix). These remarkable fish have the amazing ability to shoot down insects and bugs from overhanging branches with astonishing accuracy. To make matters more complicated, they are able to adjust their aim to compensate for the way light travels differently between water and air, in the same way that a pen or pencil seems to be distorted when placed in a glass of water. But this behaviour isn’t unique to these fish. Even the humble dwarf gourami has this skill, although not to quite the same proficiency…
