The 2010 New NT Labs Tornado Pond Protein Skimmer, know as a foam fractionator is used to prevent fish diseases as a result of bad water quality and clear your pond of unwanted foam which lurks around the water surface. The Protein Skimmer works by removing hazardous toxins such as Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrate, Phosphate and Proteins, from the pond water. Not dependant on bacteria the protein skimmer works as soon as the pump is running and even better, it is self cleaning!

How it works:
During pond water filtration unwanted nasties are transported by air bubbles to the Protein Skimmer. The main advantage is that it removes dissolved chemicals, something a normal biological filter system cannot do! The surface of an air bubble attracts dissolved substances out of the water. Bubbles have adhesive qualities, so substances like waste particles, algae and chemicals are concentrated. Mixing air with water by means of a venturi forces this mixture to a lower drain down through the filter media and on to the outlet pipes. This continuously changes the water surface tension and creates a thick foam which is then separated from the cleared water and removed via the foam outlet pipe. The treated water will then return to the pond directly or via a filter. The cleaner the water becomes the less foam the system will produce.

New improved version of the popular NT Labs Tornado Protein Skimmer. No more pressure loss on the inlet due to the absence of a venturi. Water goes straight into the filter. Air is blown into the 4mm air inlet through a supplied flowmeter to ensure a continuous flow of 0,5 l/m (30 l/h). This pressure ensures the separation of the produced foam through the foam outlet pipe. The protein skimmer is a combination of three different filter systems. The filter operates biological, mechanical and chemical.

The principle operates as follows: The surface of an air bubble attracts dissolved substances out of the water. Because of the adhesion of the bubbles these substances, like chemicals, waste particles, colourants and algae, are concentrated. By means of an air pump, air is mixed with water. By forcing this mixture through the bio rings to a lower part, there is a long contact between air and water. This changes the surface tension of the water continuously and creates a thick foam. This foam will be separated from the cleared water by a perforated cone and exits through the foam outlet. Dissolved substances like; phosphates, ammonia, humus acids, colourants, proteins and a number of heavy metals, are filtered out of the water and separated together with the foam. The extraction of dissolved substances is not possible with normal filters and can only be done if chemicals are added.

Tip:
Add 1/2 oz per gallon of Pond Salt to the water to make it act quicker.
